Case 08: Trade Show Protocol, Discussion
1. Unaware of common Thai taboos, David used his (unclean) left hand to accept Khun Pornchai’s business card, and then compounds the offense by touching the visitor’s briefcase with his (unclean) foot.
2. Your assistant’s preparation for the trade show should have included training in Thai business culture, including nonverbal behavior
3. First, leave David in charge of the booth and take Khun Pornchai for tea in the refreshment area, being sure to smile. A friendly smile is more effective than words in conveying an apology. There is no need to mention David’s missteps. Then, before your business discussion ends, invite the Thai gentleman to dinner, preferably that same evening.
